Dubai remote work visa: the virtual work permit, US$3,500 a month and one year at a time
What is marketed as the Dubai or UAE digital nomad visa is the virtual work residence permit: one year, self-sponsored, renewable, for a foreigner working remotely for an organisation outside the UAE. The income test is a salary certificate of US$3,500 a month or its equivalent, and the federal portal, the federal authority and Dubai's immigration authority all print the same figure. Health insurance and a medical fitness test are required. There is no personal income tax, and the tax residency certificate that proves it to a home country needs 183 days, or 90 with a permit and a home or a job.

The UAE does not issue anything officially called a digital nomad visa. What people searching for one need is the virtual work residence permit, issued in Dubai by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, GDRFA, and elsewhere by the federal authority, ICP. Unlike the UAE's retirement visa, where official pages disagree on the income figure, here the three government sources read on 25 October 2026 say the same thing.
Those three are: GDRFA's service page "Issuance of the virtual work residence permit"; ICP's service page for the virtual work visa, last updated 11 December 2024; and the federal government portal u.ae, "Residence visa for working outside the UAE", last updated 7 August 2026.
UAE remote work visa: the virtual work residence permit
GDRFA describes the permit in one sentence: "When a foreigner engages in remote work for an organization outside the country, they are given a residence permit for virtual work without a guarantor or host inside the country for a year, subject to renewal." The u.ae portal says the same: "The one-year visa allows them to enter the UAE under self-sponsorship."
Self-sponsorship is the point of it. An ordinary UAE residence permit hangs on an employer or a family sponsor inside the country; this one hangs on the holder.
Dubai remote work visa requirements: US$3,500 a month and proof of remote work
GDRFA's terms and conditions are two:
- "The permit applicant provides proof that the work is being done remotely and with an outside organization."
- "The applicant must provide documentation proving that they make at least $3,500 (US) per month or the equivalent amount in other currencies."
ICP asks for a "salary certificate (USD 3,500) or its equivalent in foreign currencies" and "proof of remote employment outside the United Arab Emirates". The u.ae portal gives the same minimum. US$3,500 a month is US$42,000 a year, about AED 12,850 a month at the dirham's fixed peg of 3.6725.
GDRFA's document list for the permit:
- a coloured personal photo;
- a copy of the passport;
- a copy of health insurance;
- the result of the medical fitness test;
- proof of remote work outside the UAE;
- a salary certificate of US$3,500 or its equivalent;
- the identity card receipt.
ICP adds that the passport must be valid for at least six months and that the applicant does not have to be in the UAE when the entry visa is issued.
The pages speak of a "salary certificate" and of an organisation outside the country. None of them says how a self-employed freelancer or the owner of his own foreign company proves the US$3,500. Anyone in that position should ask GDRFA or ICP before applying, not after.
UAE remote work visa cost
The fees come in two stages, and neither page adds them up.
| Stage | Line | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Entry visa, ICP | Application, issuance, smart services | AED 100 + 100 + 100 = AED 300 |
| Residence permit, GDRFA | Permit fee | AED 200 |
| Knowledge and innovation dirhams | AED 10 + 10 | |
| Fee for applying inside the country | AED 500 | |
| Delivery | AED 20 |
The GDRFA lines come to AED 740. The Emirates ID, the medical test and the insurance premium are charged separately and are not on these pages. GDRFA gives 48 hours as the expected completion time once the file is in.
Tax for remote workers in the UAE: no income tax, and a certificate that needs days
The UAE levies no personal income tax, so a salary paid from abroad is not taxed there. Whether that helps depends on the home country. A remote worker who is still treated as resident at home will still be taxed at home, and the document that proves UAE residence, the Federal Tax Authority's tax residency certificate, is not automatic with the permit. It needs 183 days in the UAE, or 90 days with a residence permit and a home or a job, or a centre of life there. How those tests work is in the guide to the UAE tax residency certificate.
A US citizen stays taxed by the United States on citizenship wherever he works.
Dubai remote work visa or the golden visa
The virtual work permit costs little and lasts a year. The investor golden visa costs AED 2 million in property and lasts ten. Between the two, a retiree can take the five-year retirement visa. All three need different evidence, and the investor and retirement routes are covered in the UAE golden visa guide and the Dubai retirement visa.
Frequently asked questions
Does the UAE have a digital nomad visa?
Not under that name. The UAE's remote work route is the virtual work residence permit: one year, self-sponsored and renewable, for a foreigner working remotely for an organisation outside the UAE.
How much income do you need for the Dubai remote work visa?
At least US$3,500 a month or the equivalent in another currency, shown by a salary certificate. GDRFA, ICP and the u.ae portal all give the same figure.
How long is the UAE remote work visa valid?
One year, renewable. GDRFA allows 60 days to stay after the permit expires or is cancelled.
Do I need health insurance for the Dubai remote work visa?
Yes. GDRFA lists a copy of health insurance and the result of a medical fitness test as compulsory documents.
How much does the UAE remote work visa cost?
AED 300 for the entry visa at ICP, and AED 740 in GDRFA permit lines for an application made inside the country, plus the Emirates ID, the medical test and insurance, which are charged separately.
Can freelancers apply for the Dubai remote work visa?
The official pages speak of a salary certificate and an organisation outside the UAE, and none sets out what a freelancer or business owner files instead. Ask GDRFA or ICP before applying.
Do remote workers pay tax in the UAE?
There is no personal income tax. Proving UAE tax residence to a home country requires the Federal Tax Authority's certificate: 183 days, or 90 days with a residence permit and a home or a job.

The UAE's investor routes are in the UAE golden visa guide, and the tax residency certificate in its own guide. Dubai after the 2026 changes is in Dubai in 2026: what changed, and rents and utility bills in the cost of living in Dubai. The digital nomad route in Greece is in the Greece digital nomad visa. If you plan to work remotely from Dubai
We do not give legal or tax advice. What we do is put a person who knows what they are asking in front of a licensed adviser in the UAE. The question that decides this route is rarely the US$3,500. It is whether your home country will accept that you have left, and how you prove it. Send it through the enquiry form. We take no part in the fee.
